A restful home for a new family on a bustling Jakarta city.
AG House is a home for a newly married couple, conceived as a gentle retreat within Jakarta's relentless urban rhythm. Immersed in demanding city lives, the owners sought a dwelling that could draw them closer; both to each other and to nature.
Turning inward, the house is organized around a generous light well: a central garden that becomes the heart of the home. This inner oasis offers reprieve from long workdays, acts as a spatial hinge connecting all functions, and serves as the primary source of daylight and cross-ventilation throughout the house.
Designed on a compact 10 × 22 sqm urban plot, AG House is a modest home for a humble, newly wedded couple. Both husband and wife carry an introverted nature, paired with quiet warmth. The architecture mirrors this duality. From the street, the white façade appears restrained and almost anonymous; yet beyond it, the house gradually opens inward, revealing layers of light, garden, and intimacy.
The building is composed of two primary masses, front and rear, linked by a linear band of secondary bedrooms and a central garden. This configuration follows a gradient of privacy: the front accommodates the common areas, while the rear volume holds the guest room below and the master suite above.
The master bedroom introduces a subtle 60 cm split-level floor. The bed occupies the higher plane, allowing parallel activities to unfold without interruption. It is a small architectural gesture that acknowledges the everyday rhythms of shared life.
Upon entry, one arrives in a generous double-height common space. Conceived as the emotional core of daily life, this room is shaped by a gently curved ceiling that creates a soft, embracing spatial quality. Carefully positioned openings puncture the envelope, allowing light to enter from multiple directions and animate the interior with changing shadows throughout the day.
A large central garden is meant to be the heart of the house. It acts as the main spatial connector and extension for the living and dining rooms. Linking all the masses and functions, this central garden is also the source of abundant natural light and ventilation for all rooms of the house.
AG House is ultimately an inward-looking sanctuary: a quiet architecture shaped by light, air, and domestic rituals, offering its inhabitants a pause from the city and a place to grow together.
